Thai Nakorn
Type: Thai Restaurant
Price: $ (Under $9)
Hours: Mon.-Sat. 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Sun. 5 p.m.-9 p.m.
Thai Nakorn is discreetly tucked into Cooper Center, a little shopping center off of Alexandria's Route 1. The restaurant's bright dining room is a pleasant surprise when you first enter the casual eatery. Specialities include shrimp wraps with pork and crab served with sweet and sour sauce, but their most popular item is still the classic pad thai or kapow. Stop by for one of their "happy" lunch specials every weekday, complete with soup and a spring roll.
User Reviews
Only after seeing another poster's comment did I learn that Thai Nikorn's roof had collapsed under the weight of one of our recent snowstorms. Everyone in the Mount Vernon area who appreciates Thai food should be glad the owners were able to reopen. This small, quiet, neighborhood restaurant serves excellent food and takes the trouble to present it beautifully. We went here last night with an out-of-town visitor and shared three dishes, Three-flavored fish, Shrimp Pad Thai and another whose name escapes me that was a mixture of brown rice, raisins, chicken and spices. All three dishes were excellent and served in portions that should satisfy almost even hearty appetites. While we had only ordered take-out from this restaurant before last night, both the quality of food and service make me look forward to returning to a nearby restaurant where we were able to carry on a conversation in relaxed atmosphere. The owner of Thai Nakorn, who was helping with service, was attentive and friendly and, after our meal, gave us a complementary serving of a traditional Thai dessert, sweet rice with fresh mango. As someone who graduated from college in South Florida and for a number of years after lived in Fort Lauderdale, where restaurants are so plentiful and most are so good that one's that aren't simply don't survive. Since coming to the DC area 15 years ago, I have always found it difficult to find good restaurants without traveling all the way to DC and even those can be hit or miss. Thai Nakorn is a pleasant surprise that, although small and completely unpretentious, based simply on the quality and taste of the food it offers, I would rate as one of the best restaurants in this area.
