For a decade, Sushi Yama has garnered rave reviews about its traditional ambiance and delectable Japanese food—particularly its renowned sushi, which keep customers coming back for seconds and thirds and more. Interestingly enough, the chefs are all Korean (they say they make the best sushi chefs), and the wait staff are all dressed in black, serving the crème de la crème of Japanese food: from sashimi to tempura to teriyaki. The prices aren’t too far-fetched, but even if they were, this gem of a place is worth it for a real fine-dining experience.

I've been going to Yama for 7 years now and I have yet to find a better cut of fish. I hold Yama as the benchmark for sushi restaurants and haven't found a competitor worthy of their rank in Northern VA or DC. There are much trendier and hipper places out there, but for a simple salmon or tuna roll done to perfection, it's worth the trip to the burbs. Friday and Saturday nights are a bit crowded and a wait is usually in the cards. Go early on weekends, or try mid-week. Also consider carry out. If you do try this place, listen to the greeting the sushi chefs give (in unison) as you enter the front door. I still have no clue what they say, but I hole my breath each time I go in anticipation. They also send you off with a "Thank you, good night" as you leave. Simple appreciation goes a long way. Modest, clean, consistent and friendly place.
