Shashemene is a newcomer to the strip of East African restaurants in Shaw’s Little Ethiopia. Upon entering the restaurant you’ll inevitably notice the tapestry of Bob Marley, especially since it’s the sole ornament on the all-white walls. This is unexpectedly fitting, as Shashemene derives its name from a small town in central Ethiopia that was given as a gift to the Rastafaris of Jamaica in the 1960s. Although Shashemene may lack the general aura of authenticity of its neighbors, it serves up delicious Ethiopian cuisine at some of the lowest prices you’ll find in the District. If you’re having trouble navigating the menu, consider going with the Doro Wot - a regional specialty of chicken, ginger, berbere, herbs and egg.
